Watch Me Turn 30, by Ashley N.
Question of the year: Is spending your late 20s living on South Beach and island-hopping the Caribbean as a career a) every responsible adult's fantasy or b) totally outlandish and ultimately unfulfilling for a semi-responsible adult who still places an abnormally high priority on fun? Perhaps the mere concept of what constitutes adulthood has been distorted due to my surroundings.

Through this blog, I hope to figure out what being "almost 30" really means to me...hopefully, before the big b-day next January.

Thanks goes to Holly C. for, first and foremost, agreeing to go on one of my press trips to the 'burbs of Fort Lauderdale and ultimately passing this site along to me.

DAY 233  |  August 31, 2008

While at the park, I stumbled upon a subculture so bizarre/interesting/disturbing that it caused me to be late for my trip to the zoo. The only thing that tops this one is a Renaissance Festival. It's a Revolutionary War re-inactment. The whole "encampment" was packing up after a long weekend of fake shooting each other but I had to wander around and ask some questions.

Are there set hours for the "battles"? Do you get a lunch break? Late at night, are there sneak attacks or do the colonists and the Brits sit around a campfire drinking beers together? Is that nose ring a clip on? Does the old guy in the puffy shirt take off his Steelers ball cap during the fight???
